The First World War saw unprecedented injury as a result of modern weaponry such as the Lewis Gun and gas-warfare. Though front-line medical units treated the majority of British patients on the Western Front, a great many were sent back to Britain to receive acute care in general or military hospitals, and then sent to convalescent homes for rehabilitative treatment. This museum will explore social impact of the convalescent uniform - or 'convalescent blues' - in addition to aspects of convalescent life.
